Sex in Popular Culture

We live in a generation that lives in the so-called “hook-up culture”, where dating is almost extinct and is instead replaced by no commitment, short-lived hook ups.  The main focus is no longer finding your soul mate or starting a family, it’s now all about sex and just doing what you want because you want to. When did this mentality begin and what are the consequences of living in this kind of culture? What can we expect of this for future generations?
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this kind behavior make up a culture. It all began in the 60s and early 70’s where it was all about “free love”. In that time, women expressed their sexuality more openly than ever before and the feminist movement began to sprout. Along with this new attitude however, erupted negative effects, such as STDs. The hippie culture changed things forever.
Before then people were very conservative about their personal lives. Even adult shows were very PG; the most you would ever see was a passionate kiss. One famous TV couple, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, weren’t even allowed to be filmed lying in the same bed, even though they were married on the show, as well as in real life. Bedrooms were hardly ever seen on most shows.
Today sex is a very common subject all over popular culture. Music now contains very explicit lyrics, ads use sometimes controversial sex appeal as a means of persuading viewers, and TV shows sometimes have a sex scene here and there (or like “The Affair”, where the entire show is based on sex). It’s not all bad however, since now there seems to be more of a push for sex education. There are also public service announcements and ads promoting safe sex.
I’m sure I can find a lot of examples in popular culture to back up my statements. I think my main focus should be on researching the effects these things have had. I need to compare statistics on teen pregnancies and maybe compare it to the statistics from other less-sexualized countries. Organization is also something I really need to work on, although this was more of a free write to get my ideas down.

  1. Like I said before I like your topic and I still think its great topic to research because “hook-up culture” is so popular and is seen everywhere. What do you personally think about your research topic? Do you find it bad? Does seeing more of this stuff harm people? I like how you brought up different areas where sex related thing can be found and it will make your paper strong because you have lots of evidence from different places. I like how you brought up music because now you can pretty much say anything no matter how inappropriate it is. You have a great start and you are staying on topic.

    1. I haven't completely decided what my stance in this is. There are a lot of pros and cons to consider. I'm all for sexual freedom and I have to admit "hooking up" is more convenient than dating, but at the same time it's completely irresponsible and risky for obvious reasons. I think if people were more educated on the topic, it wouldn't be seen as negatively. I might take an informative role on this rather than really try to persuade anyone to any side.

  2. It is very true that in today’s society dating has pretty much become nonexistent and hook-ups are a main focus in hook-up. This behavior has shown up all throughout human existence especially in biblical times. I feel a positive aspect is that like you mentioned there is a push for sex education, and there are inventions allowing for better prevention of STDs and better treatment. This will only continue to grow in the future as long as the amount of sex craze grows with it. I think this is a big effect from this.

  3. Sex is in advertising, in movies and televisions shows. We live in a very sexual culture. However it is also true we don't know too much about the biology of sex, puberty, reproduction, STD prevention and birth control. This lake of sex ed knowledge is not limited to young people. Older people are enjoying hook ups too and they appear to think they don't have to be careful because they are past child bearing age. There are studies that show with the advent and popularity of erectile dysfunction medications, there is also an increase in STDs with older people. Appears no matter how old people get, some will make the same mistakes all over again. Another scary issue that is related to proving your point is there is a strain of gonorrhea that is drug resistant.

  4. It sounds good so far. Along with looking at other countries you might look at the rates within the U.S during previous times as a comparison since you are looking at the effects they have had. Ads and television would be great to use as examples and you might even want to compare old television and new television like you did in your explanation.

  5. I agree, you have an interesting topic and you can get a lot of great examples and make strong points. You can also research the age range of when teenagers become sexuality active and compare them to what the age range was years ago. Also if birth control methods are advertised now more than they were ever before? A variety of different points can all come together to prove your thesis on this topic. What is your stance on this, or what is your research question? I'm sure that whatever your thesis ends up being you can find relevant and strong information on this topic to prove how popular culture has impacted our society. What would possible ways to keep these situation from going even further? Would it make sense to promote the love lifestyle that was seen before with commitment? Having in mind how popular culture has made our society see love and sex now?

  6. As one of the non-academic sources you might want to look into RSD (Real social dynamics) they lure men into their classes with the promise of getting good at being pick-up-artists. Specifically RSDTyler is the most sleazy of them all and definitely has the "get laid right now" mindset.

  9. Sex in popular culture has become a lot more focused now than in previous years. I think it would be interesting for you to talk about how all this began & why its so huge right now. Is there anyone trying to steer the focus away from that & who is going more towards focusing on it?

  10. I was amaze by your choice of topic. Of course then it's young teens that are in middle or high school having sex. Teens today just don't care if they loose their virginity but they care when they are pregnant. I honestly don't know as to why they even risk it or do it in the first place. It's all pleasure of course but can they simply wait or is it a must. Coiltus is only best at when it means something and knowing that they share feelings. It's truly a good topic of course cause there is so much to say if you know of course.
