Television Outline

The television was first invented in the 1920’s by Philo Farnsworth and Charles Francis Jenkins after years of work and contributions from many scientists. Since then it’s become one of the biggest contributions to popular culture. From the news, to entertainment, to advertising, television has been used for many purposes, both good and bad.
The only sources of news before television were newspapers and the spoken word. It used to take days before you found anything out. Now news is almost instantaneous...
Entertainment has changed drastically since television has been around..

Intro: Brief history of Television
P1: News
P2: Entertainment
P3: Information
Conclusion: Impact on pop culture

  1. I had totally forgotten that TV is a new media. I thought it was limited to internet stuff. Regardless, this topic has lots of versatility as far as what point you're trying to make. I think that the paragraph about entertainment would be a good place to delve into the "media is the message" theme; maybe explain why TV is so popular, what shapes what we see on TV, etc. Then you could lead into the information paragraph, keeping that in mind, and (figuratively) ask, "Knowing now that TV is so entertainment driven, how does that change what we learn from it/what information is shown?" With that idea, you could discuss why most news stations only cover sensational news, mostly negative news, and why relevant information not a priority. In this way you can link your first and third paragraphs together, ending with a strong reflection on pop culture in the conclusion.

  2. Television sounds like a great topic to discuss. There are so many different things you could dive into. I like that you are separating it into categories. I also agree with what honorsblogger had to say. I think that maybe instead of your final paragraph being its impact on pop culture, you might weave that into your body and end with the general impact of television.

  3. I think television is a good topic to discuss. You could talk about a number of things for it. I would discuss further how entertainment has drastically changed. I think it is good to talk about the negative side of television but also talk about the positive side. Talk about how the comparisons & differences between television now & then.

  4. This is indeed a great topic because of all the variety of stuff you can put from what's on television to how they are build today and such. Obviously there's so much things that picking only a few may be hard to pick out but I feel like an easy way to point them out is what's popular and how it became that. One thing is to not go off topic or repeat much that's all.

  5. Great comments already, I would add that television is older but it is safe from extinction. Television has expanded first broadcast stations went off air at night. Then they expanded broadcast hours so it was on 24 /7. Then expanded to cable, cable, satellite and other subscription services. Television advertises on other new media platforms and drags people away from the internet and small phone screens and back to our couches like the characters in the Simpsons.
